Please be advised that during the review, I have tried to avoid a lot of spoilers. However, there may still be a few included helping explain specific points.
What is Bad Boys for Life?
Released in January 2020, Bad Boys for Life is the latest instalment in the popular Bad Boys film franchise that sees Will Smith and Martin Lawrence slip back into their roles as Mike and Marcus. The two most notorious and effective detectives in Miami.
Set a few years after the events of Bad Boys II, Isabel Aretas is a modern-day witch who has devoted herself to Santa Muerte and is the widow of the former cartel kingpin Benito Aretas. Having been left to rot in jail, she has plotted, schemed and eventually come to the time she is ready to escape from prison and seek revenge for her husband’s death upon the American judicial and law enforcement officers, she holds accountable.
Unfortunately for Mike, who was one of the original team that brought the cartel down, Isabel has had her son Armando train for this day since he was young. Trained as an assassin of the highest calibre, Armando takes the fight to Miami and sets his crosshairs not only on Mike but all of those around him that would get in his way too such as Marcus and the new Miami AMMO team. Also known as Advanced Miami Metro Operations (AMMO). Who come equipped with the latest equipment and training the force has to offer.
Whether it be to avenge fallen comrades. Seek justice for loved ones. Or to stop a highly trained assassin from finishing his kill list. Mike and Marcus take to the streets once again (with the assistance of AMMO) and must fight their way across both Miami and Mexico City.

What did you think of Bad Boys for Life?
Having been a massive fan of the first two Bad Boys films, I was thrilled to see that a third has been released and as I had been catching up on last year’s big releases, I thought it would be a good time to check it out. And I was so happy that I did.
Hailed as one of the best Bad Boys films of the three released to date, Bad Boys for Life not only received mainly praise from critics but also made a massive $426.5 million at the box office which was a colossal return for a project that had a budget of $90 million. But enough about stats, let’s talk about the story.
The story is fantastic and really does humanise Mike and shows him as a vulnerable and genuine person instead of the playboy cop we know and love with the witty humour and intriguing wardrobe. Without doing spoilers, Mike’s cartel project was the first undercover operation he had out of the academy and made him the man he is today. Throw into this Marcus’ attempt to retire (which trust me, does not go down well with the family!) and the introduction of the AMMO team members. And you have a fantastic recipe for success that sees many subplots interwoven around the main plot so smoothly, so organically that everything just falls into place just right. The actors and actresses are all given in-depth character arcs that see them develop and play out in a well-structured way, you feel the loss of people when they die, and as with the last Bad Boys films, the Burnett family segments are priceless.
In addition to the story, the actors and actresses chosen did a fabulous job of demanding and holding your attention from scene to scene, whether it be heart to heart moments, bedside grief or action-packed ass-kickery. There is something for everyone. And each of the actors and actresses makes the most out of their screen time. Personally, I loved the introduction of AMMO and thought the new cast members (Paola Núñez, Vanessa Hudgens, Alexander Ludwig and Charles Melton) brought a lot to the table in terms of humour, scene delivery and action sequences. Admittedly though, to see Alexander Ludwig, best known for his role as Björn Ironside in Vikings, play an IT nerd - was great. And when he has a Dwayne Johnson moment where he goes from ‘I don’t like guns’ to ‘I’ve got to get in this fight, or people I like will die,’ like in Welcome to the Jungle, he really ramped up his acting and can-do attitude.
Aside from the acting and cast, the cinematography was breathtaking, really taking in the soul and feeling of Miami. Mexico City had some intriguing shots and locations. And the choreography for everything from the fist fights to motorcycle chases was executed perfectly.
When it comes to gripes or issues with the film, Bad Boys for Life has very few things to mention. The story admittedly is a bit generic in places but really does go all out to make up for it in others. Some of the gangster elements of the cast were a bit over the top and flamboyant which at times got a bit annoying, but luckily those scenes are short-lived. But all in all, things apart from those mentioned were balanced well.
Overall I thoroughly loved Bad Boys for Life and although there has been some marketing material that says ‘one last ride’ I hope there are more Bad Boys films to come. The film definitely sets up enough material for that to happen and the huge ash cow the film turned out to be, will hopefully go some way to securing another one or two titles.
What rating would you give Bad Boys for Life?
I would rate Bad Boys for Life as a 4.6 out of 5 bananas.
Whether you are watching for the comedy, crime or action elements of Bad Boys for Life - Bad Boys for Life as with the other two titles is hard not to love. With exotic locations, an illustrious cast and comedic gun fight moments, there is a lot on offer for all types of film aficionado. After the disappointing Rambo: Last Blood final outing, I would have to say that Bad Boys for Life is definitely an example of how you keep older (but much loved) franchises alive and exciting.
