Noob Reviews: Cagaster of an Insect Cage (Season 01)
Please be advised that during the review, I have tried to avoid a lot of spoilers. However, there may still be a few included helping explain specific points.
What is Cagaster of an Insect Cage?
Cagaster of an Insect Cage takes us to the year 2125, 30 years after the initial outbreak of a deadly virus that can target and turn some of the human populace into cagasters - giant insects that feed upon human flesh.
The series follows the adventures of Kido, a private mercenary (known as an exterminator) who saves a young girl (Illie) after the car she is travelling in is forced off of the road and her father is eaten by cagasters. A quiet lone wolf type, Kido takes Illie to E-05 (his current home) and tries to fulfil his promise to Illie’s father before he died - of seeing her delivered safely to her mother. Whilst balancing his job as an exterminator, who is paid per cagaster slain by the local military and merchant guild, to keep their people safe.
In addition to the main storyline involving Kido and Illie, there are various subplots, such as an in-depth examination of what caused the initial gangster outbreak. A look at the dark and sinister secret contained within E-07’s towers. And unearthing of a continuous power struggle, between the independent merchant guilds and E-01’s military forces.
What type of anime-style is Cagaster of an Insect Cage?
The anime is a rather odd mix of what appears to be 3D art style for the backgrounds and creatures, but it seems to be 2D for the characters.

What did you think of Cagaster of an Insect Cage?
Cagaster of an Insect Cage is an interesting anime that is well worth a look for anime veterans and newbie anime fans alike, although it is not the most unique of concepts. And comes across as quite generic at times. It can still be a fun watch at times.
Some of the downsides about the anime are:
The mix between 2D and 3D art style the designers have mixed together, although it gives the bugs life and serves to make characters pop out from the scenery, sometimes it makes creatures appear in very odd-sized portions.
The story is relatively weak overall as it is spread too thin and full of too much filler content as opposed to just running with the core story. Personally, I think the whole season would have been perfect around eight… Maybe nine episodes… As opposed to twelve.
When delivering the script, the characters have a very annoying habit of just scrapping the top of significant plot points and then not going into any more depth. Or continue to explore their initial topics a few episodes down the line.
On the plus sides though:
The combat sequences are well choreographed and fun to watch.
The character development and storylines for the main part, when you skip past all the filler sections and repetition, are quite well structured.
The season ends with the perfect amount of content to both finish here and now, wrapping up the story nicely. Or if Netflix redeemed, a second season could be commissioned, with a clean slate.
As a personal shoutout, I would just like to say I loved Miss Mario, who takes both Illie and Kido under her wing. As the transgender owner of the local bar in E-05, she is fantastic. The personality, her screen time and even her can-do attitude (and massive minigun) are great. Of all the characters, she is a reliable allrounder, and I genuinely loved her approach to situations - whether they be diplomatic, giving advise or all-out conflict.
Overall not the most original of ideas storyline-wise, and there are quite a few things people might pick issues with, such as the art style and haphazard arrangement of the storyboard at times. But definitely, something that if you stick with it, you will no doubt enjoy. Episodes one and two especially are very samey to many other anime; however, the series begins to come into its own and find its footing a little better from episode three onwards.
What rating would you give Cagaster of an Insect Cage?
I would rate Cagaster of an Insect Cage as a 3.9 out of 5 bananas.
Overall weak on the story front, with a story that plays out like many anime. With just the slightest of twists. However, once getting past the odd art style choice, and weak story, I found Cagaster of an Insect Cage to be fun, enjoyable and easy to binge-watch. Although I said it was too long and could have done a lot better, trimmed down into fewer episodes, I would still give a second season a watch if one was to be announced.
