Noob Reviews: Dragon’s Dogma
Please be advised that during the review, I have tried to avoid a lot of spoilers. However, there may still be a few included helping explain specific points.
What is Dragon’s Dogma?
Dragon’s Dogma is a Netflix exclusive loosely based around the Dragon’s Dogma video game that was released by Capcom in 2012.
Classed as both an adventure and dark fantasy, genre-wise. Dragon’s Dogma follows the adventures of The Risen (aka Ethan) as he seeks to destroy the dragon (known simply as Dragon) - who invaded his hometown of Cassardis, murdered it’s people and killed his wife and their unborn child. Luckily for Ethan, after a brief (and disturbing) encounter with the dragon - Ethan is rescued by a magical companion, known as a Pawn (aka Hannah), who vows to be his protector until his mission to destroy the dragon is complete.
Whether it be corrupt and greedy nobles, hydras, giants, goblin hordes or liches - Ethan and Hannah will come face to face with many enemies on their travels. And will need to balance their mission with the needs of those they meet on the road. Will they help a detachment of soldiers slay a lich and its skeleton army? Or perhaps save a damsel in distress from a goblin ambush? Every decision will have it’s pros, cons and new characters for us to meet.
What is a Pawn?
Pawns, although human in appearance can summon mighty magical weapons, imbue their standard weapons (and those of their allies) with magical effects - such as fire. And when sustaining fatal wounds, instead of dying. After a while can regenerate their health and return to the land of the living.
What type of anime-style is Dragon’s Dogma?
Dragon’s Dogma has stepped away from the traditional 2D style of anime and is one of the newer 3D anime formats - such as that used for the Altered Carbon: Resleeved anime movie that came out earlier this year.

What did you think of Dragon’s Dogma?
Dragon’s Dogmas is a little tough to describe. Although enjoyable as a lazy three and a half-hour watch, at the end of it - it is not overly memorable, and some may even say forgettable after a while. Although there are some great fight sequences, Dragon’s Dogma has nothing that really makes it stand out and pop its own mark on the adventure or dark fantasy anime genres.
As with so many anime these days, Dragon’s Dogma has gone the way of 3D anime over 2D anime, and it does bring the world to life beautifully with very few rough edges. But, I feel the 3D anime style is still very new and not really a style many are fully behind yet. Personally, I am liking the 3D anime style more and more as I see it but was not that keen (as I mentioned in the Resleeved review) when I first saw it. Hopefully given time, I’ll love it more, and many other people who are already posting negative reviews based around the art style may do too.
One of the things that were quite surprising in Dragon’s Dogma is it did really lean into the sex sells mentality at times. Whether it be sleeping with a succubus, a damsel in distress having her clothes torn and body fondled by horny goblins or intimate recollections between Ethan and his wife. There are definitely a few mature moments. Not full hentai but still a bit more than I would have thought would be in something rated as a 15.
Overall though I found Dragon’s Dogma to be fun, a casual watch and as I said it had some exquisite character designs, fight sequences and really easy to follow (if not somewhat overplayed) story. Definitely worth a watch if you are a fan of fantasy and adventure animes but nothing special.
If the anime were to be renewed for a second season, it would be great to have a bit more backstory and character development for crucial characters. As it stands, each story arc except for the overall vengeance upon the dragon arc - saw our heroes come up against x enemy, enter a discussion about it holding them up from their main quest, kill x threat and then they moved on. It just seemed very samey and repetitive and could do with a little bit of a shakeup, in my opinion.
What rating would you give Dragon’s Dogma?
I would rate Dragon’s Dogma as a 3.6 out of 5 bananas.
A fun and somewhat simple tale of revenge for the loss of a loved one, Ethan is fun to watch while on his adventure, but in the end, it’s a story that has been overly played (and executed far better) in other animes. Dare I say it, it will be forgotten after a few days. Worth a watch, but don’t go in with high expectations if you are a Dragon’s Dogma-verse fan as it is very loosely based around the game and its lore as opposed to having a solid core.
