Noob Reviews: Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw
Please be advised that during the review, I have tried to avoid a lot of spoilers. However, there may still be a few included helping explain specific points.

What is Hobbs and Shaw?
As you might be able to tell not only from the first part of the super-long official title but also from the tail end too, Hobbs and Shaw is a spin-off based around the Hobbs and Shaw characters from the Fast and Furious franchise.
The film itself is based around the events of a botched special operations raid in London that sees Shaw’s sister injected with a deadly virus that will be used to wipe select groups of people off of the Earth while leaving others untouched. Enabling the world to be rebuilt by a not so secret organisation who wish to see the world born anew in a design of their making.
Unfortunately, it turns out the only two people who may be up to securing the virus, stopping the organisation and rescuing Shaw’s sister. Are Deckard Shaw and Luke Hobbs, who if you have seen the other Fast and Furious films, dislike each other immensely. Let the bickering (and action-packed thrill ride) begin!

When did it come out?
The film was released in August 2019.
What can you tell us about the plot?
As mentioned above the main plot is about securing a bioterrorist threat in the form of a virus that can be used to target specific groups of people. Unfortunately at the very beginning of the film when Shaw’s sister (an MI6 agent named Hattie) and her team attempt to do this they are thwarted by the Black Superman. I kid you not, it is a name used throughout the film, and it fits so well. The Black Superman, aka Brixton Lore, is a cyber genetically enhanced super-soldier with an array of gadgets and weapons that will make you drool. Not to mention an exciting motorcycle that can bend and morph its entire shape depending on circumstances. And a private army of mercenaries. But I digress.
When the Black Superman intervenes in the raid all but Hattie from the MI6 team is eliminated, having injected herself with the virus and fled the scene. Hattie is publicly outed as a terrorist and traitor and hunted by not only the British but by Lore’s forces too.
Deckard Shaw, as you may remember, is an ex-special forces member and has made several appearances in the Fast and Furious franchise. Luke Hobbs is the loyal and unstoppable Diplomatic Security Service agent who has also popped up in the series both hunting the Fast and Furious team and working alongside them. With their unique history and skill set these two absolute legends are brought together by the CIA to save the world. Although I would be lying if I said it was smooth sailing. The bickering and fights between the two are consistent (and funny).
Who are some of the actors and actresses in the film we might know?
Cliff Curtis (Jonah Hobbs)
Dwayne Johnson (Luke Hobbs)
Helen Mirren (Magdalene Shaw)
Idris Elba (Brixton Lore)
Jason Statham (Deckard Shaw)
Vanessa Kirby (Hattie Shaw)
What did you think of Hobbs and Shaw?
Hobbs and Shaw are two of my favourite characters from the Fast and Furious franchise, and I honestly believe giving them their own spin-off was a fantastic idea that truly allowed more of the furious side to emerge. The story was well written, well-paced and the choice of not only the main actors but guest appearances was fantastic. Whether you have Ryan Reynolds as Hobb’s best friend from the CIA, he never knew he had (or wanted) or Kevin Hart as the action-orientated sky marshal looking to get ‘back into the game.’ I thought their cameos were great.
In addition to the story, the combat scenes, chase scenes and stunts were fantastically executed with many leaving me in awe simply because of the sheer scope of what they were accomplishing. The locations for the shoots were also well-chosen with great cinematography that added to the immersion.
If I were to nitpick and pick out any less enjoyable or downsides to the film, there are very few to choose from. Many may think it is too action-packed and fast-paced, but I believed it was well balanced. I do believe that the relationship between Shaw and Lore could have been explored a bit better, but it didn’t really subtract anything from the film. All you really need to know is Shaw shot Lore because Lore had it coming.
Overall a really good watch with a strong female protagonist (Hattie) alongside Hobbs and Shaw themselves, that kicked just as much (if not more) ass than the gentleman sent to rescue her.
What overall rating would you give Hobbs and Shaw?
I would give Hobbs and Shaw a solid 4 out of 5 bananas.
A fun, action-packed thrill ride that is easy to watch, easy to follow and keeps ramping up the suspense and thrills from start to finish. Fantastic choice in casting with some on-point acting and great stunt sequences. Although it ties into the Fast and Furious universe, I would stand by this as a great action film in its own right too. I can not wait to see what happens with the boys next. Who knows, if Hattie stays, it may be a new team forming.
