Noob Reviews: Gotham (Season 03)
Please be advised that during the review, I have tried to avoid a lot of spoilers. However, there may still be a few included helping explain specific points.
What is Gotham about?
What is the third season about?
At the end of season two, a bus of genetically modified humans was stolen by Fish Mooney from Indian Hill, and the occupants escaped. The Penguin was spared by Fish. And James Gordon and the GCPD were fighting to maintain control over Gotham. How could things possibly get any worse?
Step this way, dear reader, and let me rock your world with some fascinating stories that have to seen to be believed. As always numerous stories are occurring at the same time during the Gotham timeline, but some of the most intriguing for season three, would be:
After following Selina to a secret meeting with Fish Mooney, Ivy is identified as a spy and hunted down by Mooney’s associates. Unfortunately, after been wounded and falling into an unmarked toxic out take pipe - she emerges as an entirely new Ivy with what some may say, are additional poisonous abilities - wink wink.
As Edward Nygma’s story arc continues to develop, The Riddler is truly born. And seeks his revenge after a great betrayal by The Penguin.
The arrival of Jervis Tetch aka the Mad Hatter who is in search of his long lost sister. Unfortunately, it turns out she is more on the run from Jervis as opposed to long lost, and would rather die than return home with him. When events unfold, and his sister is taken from him, Jervis decides to seek his vengeance against Gotham, its people and most importantly the one he holds responsible for his sister’s death - James Gordon.
The Court of Owls which were mentioned in season two as the puppeteers behind Gotham, controlling all significant decisions of Gotham’s past - and in their eyes future. Are uncovered. Unfortunately, as they are, they detonate a viral bomb that, using a special virus distilled from the Mad Haters sisters blood - forces people’s inner demons to be released. Anger. Jealousy. Greed. Causing all-out war across Gotham between its citizens and the GCPD.
The Penguin, power-hungry and playing upon the populace’s fears of the Indian Hill escaped subjects runs for mayor and seeks political office. Whilst also juggling his role as king of Gotham’s criminal underworld.

What did you think of Gotham (Season 03)?
Continuing to go from strength to strength, season three runs at twenty-one episodes long but has the usual content of around nine hundred and twenty-four minutes screen time. Having gushed endlessly over seasons one and two, all I will say, as opposed to repeating myself is that I still stand by my beliefs, the story, casting and cinematography is fantastic. With each new character that comes into the Gotham-verse, ripples are sent out that have long-reaching impacts. It may not be the same episode, it may not be the same season. But all actions have a consequence and reaction.
Although season three sees many new characters coming into the fold, such as Ivy (before she is known as Poison Ivy). The Executioner after the Mad Hatter exposes Barnes to his sister’s blood. And Ra’s al Ghul aka the Demon’s Head. We also have the return of many old favourites, such as Joker, The Penguin and The Riddler. Also, Bruce Wayne takes steps to become the Dark Knight. Both training with Alfred and Selina (to help improve his street smarts).
Some of my favourite episodes from season three would be:
Episode eleven (known as Beware the Green-Eyed Man) which sees Lees fiance Mario pitted against James on the day of Mario and Lee’s wedding. Infected with the Mad Hatter’s virus, Mario plans and elaborate scheme with which to turn Lee against James forever.
Episode twelve (known as Ghosts) in which Selina Kyle’s mum returns to Gotham. However, when she turns up in the middle of a heist and saves Selina, Bruce and Alfred - was this luck or part of a larger con. At the same time, The Riddler rolls out a psychological war against Oswald as he fights to save public face as the mayor. And control of the criminal underworld as The Penguin.
Episode fourteen (known as The Gentle Art of Making Enemies) sees Joker return to Gotham. Resurrected from the dead by a crazed worshipper. Only to be greeted by a following of fanatical Joker fans eager to see Gotham burn.
No doubt you will be able to guess what the rating for the season three review will be already, but yet again this is a season that just improves and builds upon the lore and setting of the first two. I can not praise Gotham highly enough and would highly recommend it as worth a watch to both crime enthusiasts and DC fans alike.
What rating would you give Gotham (Season 03)?
I would rate Gotham’s third season as a 5 out of 5 bananas. I am sensing a trend here.
Continuing to go from strength to strength, things truly reach boiling point in season three as Gotham is gassed and put to the torch. The story continues to drive home hard-hitting twist after hard-hitting twist, and the character arcs are truly bountiful with many new villains been introduced to Gotham - some even at the expense of those we once called a hero. A fantastic stand-alone universe that could give any of the Batman series a run for their money.
