Noob Reviews: Hunters (Season 01)
Please be advised that during the review, I have tried to avoid a lot of spoilers. However, there may still be a few included helping explain specific points.
What is Hunters?
Hunters is an Amazon exclusive released earlier this year that is set in 1977 New York City. And follows the exploits of a band of Nazi Hunters who are hunting for escaped Nazi war criminals, whether they be simple camp guards or the elite of the Third Reich’s command team. None will escape being brought to justice for their parts in the horrendous crimes committed during World War II. It is said that the series was “inspired by a number of real Nazi hunters through the decades.”
The first season of Hunters introduces us not only to our team and lays out the background for why each of them is on the team. Whether they be a Vietnam veteran (Joe Mizushima), former MI6 operative (Sister Harriet) or German-Jewish Holocaust survivors (Mr and Mrs Markowitz). But also introduces us to Jonah Heidelbaum, a young maths genius who is thrust into the world of Nazi-hunting after his grandmother is executed (in their own living room) by a Nazi who she was actively investigating.
Little do the team know though, as they start to look into the execution of one of their own and bring the assassin to justice that they will stumble upon an advanced plot that has infected the highest levels of America’s power base - to create a Fourth Reich. And it will be down to the team and a reluctant FBI agent (Millie Morris) to stop the Nazi’s plan before it reaches fruition.

What did you think of Hunters?
Having seen the trailer for Hunters, I was immediately interested and was definitely glad that I gave this show a watch and admittedly am excited to hear when researching today, that a second season is coming.
With a fantastic cast consisting of a mix of both new and veteran actors, the show for the majority of time hits a high octane pace and sticks with it. Whether it be the execution scenes, fight scenes or even the flashbacks when the team reveal who they are hunting and what crimes they have been accused of. The show has a way of even making the research and bookworm segments enjoyable. Admittedly there are times where the story will divert off into various subplots that seem irrelevant in the grand scheme of things, but these are few and far between.
When it comes to the cinematography, and I am no expert as I was not around in 1977 believe it or not. The director and production team have done a fantastic job of bringing 1977 New York City to life - going by my research on google and studying the period during A-Level history. And have continued this level of commitment and detail into their Vietnam recreations and other settings. Each one crafted to captivate the imagination and draw you into the immersion.
From a script point of view, my only problem would be, not with the delivery per se, but the story itself. At times the story seems excessively over the top and steps away from what I would call historical accuracy. And when the team brings someone to justice, this is often confronting the Nazi with their crimes and then subjecting them to torture until they confess. Or if the Nazi is overly smug and pleased with their previous work, it jumps directly to execution. Some of these scenes can be very graphic, and at one stage a Nazi is fed excrement. Scenes like this for some viewers may be a bit too much, so I thought it best to mention in advance as it garnished quite a few negative reviews on several sites.
Having spoken to friends and family who have also seen Hunters, the best way for me to sum up Hunters is give it a watch. Within the first two episodes (there are ten in total, each running for around an hour) you will be able to tell if it is something you like or not.
What rating would you give Hunters?
I would rate Hunters a solid 4.25 out of 5 bananas.
Overall I would say Hunters is a good watch, not quite 5 stars as it has some issues as mentioned above and becomes quite predictable early on meaning the grand reveal at the end of the first season is something you have seen coming for a few episodes. But, I would recommend it as something to watch.
