Noob Reviews: Kakegurui (Season 02)

Please be advised that during the review, I have tried to avoid a lot of spoilers. However, there may still be a few included helping explain specific points.

What is Kakegurui?

If you have not done so already, you can check out the review of season one here. Giving you the story so far, an introduction to the characters and initial thoughts and opinions on the series.

What type of anime-style is Kakegurui?

Kakegurui is delivered in a captivating 2D art style but does also have a live-action adaptation too which we will be reviewing in the future. Both the anime series (both seasons) and live-action series, are available to watch now via Netflix.

What is the second season about?

Kakegurui (Season 02), also known as Kakegurui xx, is a direct continuation from the first season.

After Yumeko began to work her way through the student council, seeking out her next big win as her gambling addiction continued to grow. We see season two bring in a new faction of players comprised entirely of Momobami clan members who seek to win the title of student council president after Kirari announced her plans to step down from her current presidency. However, as season one taught us, the school president will have absolute power over the school, its students and future businessmen and women as they move beyond the school out into the wider world. So as you may be able to guess, is a highly sought after prize.

With the introduction of the new Momobami clan students, a fresh injection of schemes, plotting and personalities is brought into the school. Whether it be Miri Yobami and Miyo Inbami who play high stakes games of life and death with fatal poisons. Natari a movie star who seeks to dethrone Yumemi as the school’s favourite entertainer. Or Rei Batsubami who aims to ruin the Monobami clan and destroy their grip over the school entirely, as payment for how they have treated her previously. A lot is going on with many a plot and subplot majestically weaving through one another.

Do you have a trailer to show us?

Unfortunately not one I was able to embed, and strangely enough, there was not one listed on Netflix’s official YouTube channel. However, fear not, there is one available on Netflix’s own streaming platform which you can see here, whether or not you have an active subscription. However, just to clarify, this is to view the trailer and not to watch the full series - you will need to subscribe and log in to be able to do that.

Alternatively, if you have an active Netflix subscription, you can find the Kakegurui anime series here.

When was Kakegurui (Season 02) released?

The second series of Kakegurui was initially released in January 2019 and had it’s final episode, for season two, made available on the 26th March 2019.

How are the episodes structured?

There are twelve episodes in total, each Running for twenty-four minutes. Giving you over two hundred and eighty minutes of content.

Who are some of the actors and actresses that we might know?

For a full cast listing, please see the official IMDB page here.

What did you think of Kakegurui (Season 02)?

What a return Yumeko makes in the second season. Having not learnt anything from her time gambling in season one she continues to go bigger, bolder and more reckless with her bets - to the extent she literally puts her life on the line. And yet always seems to be able to spot the tells from her opponents. And have a plan to see her succeed in the end.

The return of both fan favourites from the first season and introduction of new characters was also handled beautifully for the most part. Still, admittedly some of the characters such as Rei, Saotome and Sayaka. Fall into overused stereotypes and over the top anime personality types that can get dull at times, especially as it can make them look either over or less self-confident than they have been built up to be in other episodes. Although this is not a consistent problem, it is a bit of an annoyance when it does happen as it seems their character development has been squashed for the sake of someone else’s plot twist. Or a story arc. Instead of been worked in more smoothly or organically.

Overall though with the return of a great art style, a great intro and unique backing tracks - I have to admit Kakegurui continues on going strong. The story at times became predictable with many players (due to the script) giving away too much too fast, which spoilt a few plot twists (and lost some points from the review) but definitely worth a watch. And although delayed because of COVID. There has been a season three confirmed to be due to go into production soon!

What rating would you give Kakegurui (Season 02)?

Casting 🍌🍌🍌🍌🍌

Effects 🍌🍌🍌🍌🍌

Entertainment 🍌🍌🍌🍌🍌

Story 🍌🍌🍌🍌

I would rate the second season of Kakegurui as a 4.6 out of 5 bananas.

Kakegurui continues to be a fantastic and alluring anime that will capture both interest and imagination alike. Although weaker in terms of character development, delivery of the story and structure for some episodes, compared to season one. I would still highly recommend as worth a watch.
