Noob Reviews: Paradise PD (Season 01)
Please be advised that during the review, I have tried to avoid a lot of spoilers. However, there may still be a few included helping explain specific points.
What is Paradise PD?
Paradise PD is a rather unique look at one of the most dysfunctional, corrupt and dare I say incompetent police precincts possible. Based out of the fictional town of Paradise, a band of misfit officers band together to bring law and order to the streets.
I think one of the best ways to sum up their 'skill set' is to introduce the team.
First up we have Kevin Crawford (voiced by David Herman) who is an eager untrained rookie who using his father's own gun - shot his father in the testicles, ruining not only his sex life but marriage. As a police officer, Kevin is afraid of his own shadow and has an affair with an enhanced AI police car named Karla in episode four.
Gina Jabowski (voiced by Sarah Chalke) is a psychotic police officer who is the embodiment of the strong arm of the law. Shot in the back of the head and left for dead at the age of ten, she has grown to become highly aggressive, addicted to the larger boned of the male species and has an unhealthy (full-on stalker) obsession with fellow officer Dusty.
Gerald Fitzgerald (voiced by Cedric Yarbrough) joined the Paradise PD for a more laid back career and suffers from PTSD due to his time serving in larger city police forces. He has also eaten an ex-partner (Kevin) who was chopped up and served over seven states in ravioli. And has a dark and sinister secret that rocks the very foundations of the precinct.
Dusty Marlow (voiced by Dana Snyder) is a rather large (some say obese) police officer who is not only a portable blob of bullet sucking kevlar. But also begins his own business selling cocaine infused chicken to the masses. He is a very innocent man child with a heart of gold.
Stanley Hopson (also voiced by Dana Snyder) is an elderly bisexual officer who is somewhat comedic and entertaining. With a life story and/or sexual innuendo for every occasion, it takes his fellow officers a great deal of time to keep him hidden from the public eye. One one of the few occasions he is sent on assignment, he ends up getting kidnapped, declared dead and stuffed inside of a test tube where aquatic animal parts are grafted onto the elderly and then harvested and served at Red Lobster.
Bullet (voiced by Kyle Kinane) is the Paradise PD's drug dog, the only thing is not only is he addicted to the drugs he is meant to find. He frequently holds dog orgies fuelled with the contraband alcohol and drugs the officers have secured away in the evidence room. When not abusing his position, he also sidelines as a dogfighting champion whose expertise lies in his WWE abilities and stage presence.
Last but not least we have Chief Randall Crawford (voiced by Tom Kenny) aka Kevin's dad aka the officer who has both of his testicles shot off with his own gun, by his own son. The chief is often found attempting to control his officers, run political relations and occasionally overdosing on testosterone patches. But not all is lost, sometimes he also takes the lead on cases such as when the local church raises funds for the police department but refuses to hand over the money until every Dungeons and Dragon player in Paradise is rounded up and delivered to the church's reeducation camp.
As you might be able to tell a lot is going on in the small town of Paradise, from day to day crimes, to matters of the heart and even a new drug (called Argyle Meth) flooding the streets.

When did it come out?
Paradise PD season one came out in October 2018 and the second series is already scheduled to come out this month. If all has gone to plan it should have been released last Friday on the 06th March.
How many episodes are there?
There are ten episodes in total for the first season, each averaging around twenty-five minutes.
Who created Paradise PD?
Paradise PD was created by Damn! Show Productions, Bento Box Entertainment and Odenkirk Provissiero Entertainment. And is released (at the moment) exclusively on Netflix.
What did you think of Paradise PD?
Straight off the bat, I would say the art style to Paradise PD reminded me of Family Guy as did the humour, but it quickly becomes apparent that Paradise PD is its own beast with its own sense of humour and style for delivery. Although it will not be to everyone’s taste, Paradise PD attempts to tackle some significant issues with slightly twisted humour and outlook on events. If I were to described the humour, try to picture it been somewhat ruder than Family Guy but not entirely pushing it as far as South Park.
Each of the episodes and the characters I found to be well designed, with some fantastic details and animation. The storylines are always good for a giggle, if not a full-on laugh out loud, and the chemistry between not only the officers but also criminals and members of the public is well scripted.
Some of my personal favourite moments from the series are when Hobbo Cop is introduced. A homeless man who is taken from the streets and used as a replacement for a bomb diffusion robot. After he survives, he is welcomed onto the team as one of them. We also have Bullet and officer Hopson who are sent to secure a thanksgiving turkey but end up shooting dead someone in a turkey suit and serving him (cooked) to the homeless of Paradise in a severe case of the wrong identity. And last but not least Dusty holds ‘Felony Feud’ in which, when tasked with releasing a convict from the cells, he has them compete in a series of game show like tasks.
All in all, I thought the episode lengths were just right. The humour was also well balanced and knew when not to go past a certain point, and all in all, it was an easy watch, and I found myself just going from one episode to another. As I said at the beginning, the humour may not be for everyone, but I do think it will find itself popular with quite a broad stroke of viewers.
What final rating would you give Paradise PD (Season 01)?
I would give the first season of Paradise PD a 4 out of 5 bananas.
Although a great watch, Paradise PD is not flawless. At times it heavily depends on scat jokes, moments of antisemitism and the old reliable racial issues. However, these are just infrequent additions to an otherwise recommended watch!
