Noob Reviews: Scissor Seven (Season 01)

Please be advised that during the review, I have tried to avoid a lot of spoilers. However, there may still be a few included helping explain specific points.

What is Scissor Seven?

Scissor Seven is the tale of a highly skilled and elite shapeshifting assassin called Seven. The Scissor part to Scissor Seven is a head nod to the fact Seven's weapon of choice is a pair of telekinetically controlled scissors.

Suffering from amnesia, Seven is trying to find out who he is and where he came from. However, to survive the day to day while he seeks the truth, he not only works as a hairdresser but partners with a sentient blue chicken (called Da Bao) who has a side business arranging contract killers for hire. Da Bao is not without his own dark and mysterious past, be he would prefer to run from his rather than face it. He does though have a soft side and cares for Xiao Fei, the green chicken son of a friend he lost in an organised fight with a pheasant before the great coop liberation which allowed him his current freedom. Although Xiao Fei has little to say, the small green chicken (who is continually saving Seven from precarious situations) can transform into a human bodybuilder from the neck down, when that extra bit of muscle is needed.

Whether Seven is trying to assassinate a dominatrix grandma picking their grandkid up from school. Getting between underwear fetishists and the local Purity Society. Or taking a job from Meow (the Chief of Cats) to assassinate her old flame (and leader of the street dogs). Each episode transitions seamlessly from one to the other. And as odd as this may sound, seems perfectly reasonable for the island where all of this takes place.

Scissor Seven has been described as both a comedy and action-adventure, with a quirky sense of humour and script delivery.

What did you think of Scissor Seven (Season 01)?

From the trailer through to the end of the last episode, Scissor Seven is a step into the weirdest and most wonderful side of anime. Whether you are looking for poultry revenge missions, (not so) secret assassin guilds fighting for supremacy or the reunification of parted lovers - Scissor Seven truly has a little bit of something for everyone.

At first, the art style took me a bit by surprise as it looked very rough and rugged as opposed to smooth and clean cut like most animes. Based on that alone I doubted I would watch many episodes but found myself binge-watching them all. Although not sure what to compare Scissor Seven to, to describe the art style, friends have advised it is akin to Kenichi. Unfortunately, I have not seen this myself but believe the full title is Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple.

Although there is not really anything new or groundbreaking with the anime, it does tend to genre hop quite frequently as if trying to decide what type of anime it wishes to be. Is it an action-adventure? Comedy? Or even a romance? But I think it is because of this indecisiveness and genre-hopping that Scissor Seven is so easy to just sit back and watch.

Currently, no mention of a season 02 has been made on Netflix. Still, it did pop up multiple times from very reputable sources when researching the origins and people behind Scissor Seven. When it does come out, be sure to check back for a review of season 02 as I will definitely be watching.

What rating would you give Scissor Seven (Season 01)?

🍌🍌🍌🍌

I would give the first season of Scissor Seven a 4 out of 5 bananas.

Overall a bit of a sleeper. An underrated anime that is your typical example of don’t judge an anime by its art style.

Although the art style is different from many other animes out there, once you actually let yourself get immersed in the actual adventure itself (story, action scenes and comedic aspects). It really is a gem that has to be seen if you are looking for something new and fun to pass the time.

My only negative feedback would be that the episodes vary in length and in my opinion, are too short. Some episodes appear to be fillers that ideally could have been added into other episodes. Although it would have reduced the total number of episodes, it would have been a bit more logical.

Thank you very much for checking out the review, and if you are interested in Scissor Seven and would like to check it out for yourself, to form your own opinion, you can check it out here.
