Noob Reviews: Vinland Saga (Season 01) | Continued

Please be advised that during the review, I have tried to avoid a lot of spoilers. However, there may still be a few included helping explain specific points.

The review will be a continuation from the first review, which is available on the blog here.

What is the Vinland Saga?

As to avoid a lot of repeat posting or copy and pasting, you can check out full details of Vinland Saga here. Unfortunately, the review has been split into two parts as there were some delays in publishing episode 18 onwards of the series.

In a nutshell, though, Vinland Saga follows the adventures of a young boy named Thorfinn who, son to a murdered Viking chief and legendary warrior, seeks revenge upon his father’s murderer (Askeladd). In an odd twist of events, Askeladd recruits Thorfinn into his Viking Warband, and for every great deed or noteworthy accomplishment, Thorfinn performs on the battlefield. Askeladd allows him the opportunity to challenge him to a duel so that Thorfinn might get the revenge he so desperately seeks.

How many episodes are there?

In total 24 episodes averaging about 25 minutes in length for each. This means there were an additional seven episodes released over almost two months, since the first part of the review.

What happened in the last seven episodes?

The last episodes to Vinland Saga were surprisingly even more action-packed and adventure-filled than the ones before, just as I had hoped in the final thoughts of the first review, the series just kept going from strength to strength.

Ultimately the episodes not reviewed previously see season 01 draw to a climactic finish that sees not only Thorfinn and Thorkell finally duel uninterrupted but Thorfinn, Askeladd and Askeladd’s Warband are able to rescue Canute. Who begins to amass his own following in the hopes of taking on his father the king.

Some truly notable surprises were actually delivered by Askeladd as he attempts to ‘toughen up’ Canute for his future role as the new king. These come in many forms but include such things as murdering other main characters, literally putting Canute on the throne by his own hand and revealing some very well kept secrets as to who he really is. And the origins of his family.

Without doing spoilers, a few people commented previously on how they found the initial few episodes of Vinland Saga to be slow and a bit boring. But I will have to say the later events especially, are worth hanging in there for.

What did you think of Vinland Saga (Season 01) now it has finished?

To be honest, my thoughts on the series do not differ too much from those in the initial review. Except for the fact I truly did love the entire season from beginning to end. I thought the storytelling, subplots and character development were handled really well. The art style was beautiful, and the musical scores were fantastically composed and at times, moving. Telling the story through the accompanying music.

My only real pet peeve about the end of season 01 was the delays caused by the art team and publication, however, with a small group and it coming to the end of the year it couldn't really be helped. So I am not holding it against them when we do the final rating.

Overall though the conclusion to Vinland Saga (season 01) was gratifying and although it sees Thorfinn setting sail and taking off to the high seas once again, there is more than enough material to see Thorfinn return for more grand adventures.

What final rating would you give Vinland Saga (Season 01)?

🍌🍌🍌🍌🍌

I will stand by my guns and keep Vinland Saga on a 5 out of 5 bananas rating.

The series was thoroughly enjoyable, a rather unique IP and it was told in such a way that I was not too fond of the weekly release schedule as I continually wanted the next episode. To binge-watch through to the end of the first season. Taking that level of storytelling, coupled with their chosen art style, and it was a great combination that I really hope returns for a second season.
